Story

The Beginning

Golf is part of my beginning. It's a big chapter in my life's story. I was introduced to golf as a young kid by my dad, Steven James. He was a pro at a local course and taught me (and so many other kids) how to play. It was also my first job. I would scrub clubs in the bag room or pick balls on the range (by a shag bag) in exchange for Diet Dr. Peppers and Kit Kat bars. Learning the fundamentals of golf: grip, set-up, tempo, etiquette, etc., morphed into lessons off the course and into life.

The Lessons

Patience: You don't become good at anything overnight. Resilience: One minute you feel like you've got the hang of it, and the next day you're back to square one. Stick with it. Positivity: “People don't remember the shots, they remember the stories.” Even if you're having the worst round of your life, your character shines through in how you're celebrating your playing partners. I'm grateful for the lessons — on and off the course. And have my dad to thank for it all.

The Now & Next

I'm creating Sydney James as a thank-you letter to my dad, who passed away in 2012. It’s also an invitation for a new wave of golfers to get involved in a game that so many love with better clothes, and the best of company. Honoring the past, looking to the future, and celebrating today.

It's a place to belong to.
